Clinic fees to budget for
Courier costs are only part of the total. Ask both clinics about their own charges, which may include:
- A release or shipping-preparation fee at the releasing clinic.
- Any outstanding storage fees, which usually must be paid before release.
- An intake fee at the receiving clinic, plus its ongoing storage fees.
- Notary fees, if your consent forms need notarising.
- Import permit fees, for some international routes.

Is a hand-carry courier worth the cost?
For many families, yes. Hand carry means a person is responsible for your embryos at every moment, they stay out of the baggage hold and away from X-ray, and someone can act immediately if a flight changes. When embryos represent years of treatment, that peace of mind is often what people are paying for.
How long does embryo shipping take?
Many domestic transfers are completed in a day. International journeys usually take one to two days. The overall timeline depends mostly on how quickly clinic paperwork is completed.
Can embryos be damaged during shipping?
Embryos that stay at cryogenic temperature aren't affected by the journey. The risks come from a shipper losing temperature or being mishandled, which is what validated equipment, cabin carriage and documented custody are designed to prevent.
What happens if a flight is delayed or cancelled?
A validated dry shipper holds temperature for several days, so there's a wide margin. Your specialist stays with the shipper, rebooks the fastest safe option and keeps you and both clinics informed.
Can I carry my own embryos?
Some clinics allow patients to collect embryos themselves, but many require a professional courier. Travelling with a dry shipper means managing airport security, airline rules and the clinic handovers yourself, which is why most families choose a specialist.
